Sparkling Korea - Myeongdong & Namdaemun
| Quote: | Myeong-dong or Myong-dong is a dong in Jung-gu, Seoul, South Korea and is located between Chungmu-ro, Eulji-ro, and Namdaemun-ro. It covers 0.91 km² with a population of 2986, and is mostly a commercial area.
Myeongdong is one of Seoul’s main shopping districts featuring mid to high priced retail stores and international brand outlets. It is a popular area for particularly young people as a center for fashion and nightlife. Myeongdong is also the ninth most expensive shopping street in the world in terms of floorspace rents.
Myeongdong has four large department stores: Migliore, Lotte Department Store, Avatar, and High Harriet. It is also the center of major financial services and securities. Some of the major Insurance, financial services companies, and investment firms that are headquartered in Myeongdong includes: Citibank, SK Corporation, Kookmin Bank, Korea Exchange Bank, Lone Star Funds, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, AIG Korea Insurance, Hana Bank, and HSBC. Seoul's financial center is divided between here and Yeouido where the Korean Stock Exchange is located.
Myeongdong is also the site of the Chinese Embassy, YWCA headquarters, UNESCO Hall and the Myeongdong Cathedral; the oldest Catholic cathedral in Korea. It is here where political demonstrations can sometimes be seen. |
| Quote: | | Namdaemun market is one of the oldest continually running markets in South Korea, and it is the largest retail market in Seoul.[1]. The streets in which the market is located were built in a time when cars were not prevalent, so the market itself is not accessible by car. The main method of transportation to and from the market is either by motorcycle or on the backs of pedlars. It occupies many city blocks, which are blocked off from most car traffic due to the prevalence of parking congestion in the area. The market can be accessed by subway or bus. |

Sparkling Korea - Itaewon
| Quote: | Many restaurants serving international dishes are found in this area including cuisine from India, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, Thailand, and Mexico, foods that are not widely available in Korea. Some restaurants serve halal food, while the Seoul Central Mosque is also located in Itaewon.
Itaewon is also, along with Insadong and Seoul Tower, one of the most popular areas in Seoul for tourists. Major hotels such as the Hyatt and local landmark Hamilton Hotel can be found here as well as dozens of shops and services aimed at tourists. High quality leather products in Korea can be found here at reasonable prices (though haggling is expected) as well as various types of traditional Korean souvenirs. Counterfeit goods and clothing are ubiquitous and of varying quality, but some genuine goods which are produced in Korea for the international market as well as some authentic imports can sometimes be found here. Itaewon is also known to have various tailors that peddle their services for making custom-made suits.
The traditional center of prostitution activity in the area is known as Hooker Hill. Prostitution has long been visible in Itaewon. Although efforts to crack down which began in 2000 and were renewed in 2004 have reduced the visibility of the trade, brothels still exist and are quite easy to find. |

Sparkling Korea - Nami Island
| Quote: | A place where there are romances and different beauty of each season. Nami Island located in Bangha-ri, Namsan-myeon, Chuncheon-si was not an island originally. It is an island of the Bukhangang River, which was made as a result of the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam. Its circumference is about 6Km, and its area is 430,000. There are a grassplot of 260,000 in the center of the island, and chest-nut trees and poplars around it. This place is fit for a walkway.
Walking into the island along the straight way starting from the Nami Island wharf, you can find a grave of General Nami this island named after. He passed the military service examination at the age of 17 and suppressed a riot led by Lee Shi-Ae in the 13th year of King Sejo' reign of Joseon Dynasty, and then was promoted to 'Byeongjopanseo (Minister of National Defense)' at the age of 27. But he died young at 28, denounced as a traitor after King Yejong's enthronement.
This is the location of well-known Korean tv drama "Winter Sonata".

Sparkling Koera - N Seoul Tower
| Quote: | Seoul Tower is a communication tower located in Seoul, South Korea. Built in 1969, and opened to the public in 1980, the tower measures 236.7 m (777 ft) in height (from the base) and tops out at 479.7 m (1,574 ft) above sea level. It has also been known as the Namsan Tower or Seoul Tower. After the tower's original owner merged with the CJ Corporation, it was renamed the N Seoul Tower (official name CJ Seoul Tower).
Most visitors ride the Namsan cable car up the mountain, and then walk to the tower. The tower features a gift shop and restaurants on the ground floor. Visitors may go up the tower for a fee. There are four observation decks (the 4th observation deck, which is the revolving restaurant, rotates at a rate of one revolution every 48 minutes), as well as gift shops and two restaurants. Most of the city of Seoul can be seen from the top. Close to N Seoul Tower is a second lattice transmission tower. |
